Do lifting belts work? Absolutely, Yes!
Belts work as a tool for you to brace your core and back muscles against during lifting. It gives stability
and makes it easier to keep the spine in a neutral position. However, it is very important to know how
and to be able to brace and use those same muscles without the use of a belt. Almost every movement
we do in CrossFit requires core stability, which then improves form and efficiency of the movement.
Do lifting belts prevent injury? No!
A belt shouldn’t be used as a crutch, it isn’t magic. It can certainly help when going for a new 1 rep max
or at higher percentages or max effort reps. Using a belt for every workout could actually cause
weakening of your core muscles because you’re constantly relying on it. Adding core strengthening
exercises to your routine and focusing on form is your best bet to prevent injury.
Do you need a lifting belt? Maybe!
Whether you choose to wear a belt or not and how often is totally up to you. Many athletes find
wearing them helpful during exercise but it should not be used as a preventative measure alone.
